In 2023, I became a new mother and gained a fresh perspective on life which was seizing opportunities and pursuing our goals with the time we have. This realisation has prompted me to embark on the journey of entrepreneurship, aiming to make a positive difference in the world by establishing my own swimwear brand, Barebone Swim. As a sustainable and ethical brand, our mission is to offer swimwear that carries a purpose beyond mere fashion. Despite the prevailing challenges of juggling motherhood, my love life and running a startup at the same time, I remain unwavering in my determination to turn my dream into a reality and start a swimwear label that aligns with my values. The concept of building a brand that revolves around sustainability and ethical production resonated deeply within me, fueling my passion and unwavering commitment to transforming it into a tangible venture.

Design Research

I quickly discovered that I needed tech packs also known as technical packs to communicate my designs to manufacturers These documents gave detailed information on the design, construction and other specifications needed to bring my vision to life. So I started learning how to create technical packs (tech packs) and drawing up CAD sketches with the help of Youtube and my parents who worked in the fashion industry.

With the knowledge I needed, I now had to design my first collection. I immersed myself in the latest fashion trends, attended trade shows and gathered inspiration from various sources. I explored diverse themes, colours and patterns with consideration for both the people and the planet. I knew that I wanted to create a swimwear line that caters to everyone's unique requirements and ensures a perfect blend of style and functionality.

Sustainable Material Selection

The commitment to sustainability begins with the conscious selection of fabrics. I was doing an abundant amount of research to look for the best eco-friendly materials that offer high performance and durability –Italian Carvico Vita. (Not to mention how difficult it was to get hold of fabric swatches and color books of this material) Our swimwear is predominantly crafted using recycled materials such as discarded fishing nets and post-consumer waste. These materials are then transformed into a luxurious fabric called ECONYL. Carvico purchases recycled Nylon yarns from ECONYL® in Italy, blending Extra Life Lycra to give the fabrics stretch and flexibility, resulting in a soft hand feel & great body-enhancing properties. By incorporating these materials into our swimwear, we minimise our ecological footprint and promote a circular economy.

Additionally, I extended Barebone’s sustainable practices to packaging. I have carefully selected packaging materials such as reusable cotton bags, compostable mailer bags, and garment labels made out of eco-friendly materials to further pledge my commitment to sustainability. This ensures minimal environmental impact on Barebone Swim's part.

Sourcing for an Ethical Manufacturer

Ethical production practices are at the core of the brand's ethos. Partnering with manufacturers that share my values of ethical production and sustainability was a major consideration factor. This meant locating manufacturers who adhere to strict ethical guidelines, ensuring fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect for the artisans who create our swimwear.

Initially, I wanted to source for a local manufacturer, but as a startup, I did not have the finances to fund the costly bulk fabrication process which led me to broaden my search and consider international options such as Brazil, China, and Indonesia. After researching and contacting various suppliers, I eventually found a reputable and sustainable manufacturer in Bali.

Bulk production also cost played a significant role in the decision-making process, I sought a manufacturer that offers competitive pricing without compromising on quality or ethical production practices. This allows Barebone Swim to offer its high-quality and sustainable swimwear at a more accessible price point compared to other luxury brands.

Quality Assurance & Longevity

As part of sustainability, longevity is essential for sustainable goals. Each piece undergoes meticulous quality control checks to guarantee that it meets my high standards. With a focus on exceptional craftsmanship, reinforced stitching and attention to detail. I also conducted color dye checks, ensuring that fabric colors withstand the test of time. By creating durable swimwear, It encourages customers to embrace a more sustainable approach to fashion – "buy less, choose well, make it last."

Conclusion

From understanding the intricacies of running a business to staying on top of the latest fashion trends, I have faced numerous obstacles along the way.
